Step Up volunteering

The Connection's Social Enterprise trains clients in kitchen skills

Developing the skills and confidence to make a wider contribution

Our Step Up volunteering programme gives clients of The Connection the opportunity to undertake volunteering placements across our different departments – from helping at fundraising events or assisting our finance team to introducing new clients to the Day Centre or helping with our gardening projects. The placements offer people the chance to get involved, develop skills, gain confidence and experience and move on in a safe and supportive environment. This is part of our strength-based approach and is a vital step in our clients’ recovery.

Experts by experience

At The Connection, we are committed to working with clients as ‘experts by experience’ to not only deliver services, but to help us evaluate and improve these services to make sure they are as effective as they can be. For this reason many of the placements are centred around delivering and improving what we do.

We believe that by enabling staff, clients and volunteers to all work alongside each other we will be better placed to empower our clients in working towards an independent life.

We’re award winners!

We were thrilled to win Homeless Link’s Excellence in Co-production Award in July 2019, recognising our work to involve our clients and people with experience of homelessness in designing and delivering our services.

Why Step Up?

We asked some of our Step Ups why they chose to volunteer which us and how it has helped them. This is what they said…

“To keep me busy. To volunteer, to help. To prove to myself that I can do it.”

“The Connection has helped me and I would like to give back. I also have plenty of skills and enjoy helping people”.

“To develop new skills to help me build my curriculum.”

“I used to work in admin and I would like to use my skills to progress whilst helping others.”

“I want to experience something new and learn new skills.”

“I would like to keep myself occupied whilst sorting out my immigration situation. I would like to obtain new skills and also give back to the Connection at St Martins for all the support I have received.”
