From Homelessness to Cancer Researcher
When E.M. first came to The Connection, life had taken a difficult turn. After facing difficulties with a housing organisation and losing access to support, E.M. became homeless and destitute.
“Everyone else, including my own lawyer, couldn’t help me. One charity even told me I looked too well to be sleeping rough. But when another charity referred me to The Connection, everything changed.
Our team quickly stepped in to provide a safe space and practical support, from helping E.M. access essential services and facilities, to working on their case to recover important documentation that had been held without reason.
Our support didn’t stop there.
E.M. was also supported through a successful family reunion application, a truly life changing milestone. With his family by his side and a sense of stability returning, he was able to start focusing on the future.
Since then, E.M. has gone from strength to strength, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree (Hons) in Medical Sciences from Oxford Brookes University. It was a moment of pride, especially being able to share it with family.
Not long after graduation, E.M. achieved something even more remarkable.
He secured a place on a highly competitive Master of Research (MRes) in Cancer Genomics at Oxford Brookes University, a programme focused on developing new ways to diagnose and treat cancer early.
Out of 60 applicants, E.M. was the only one to successfully pass all the interviews.
From being homeless to becoming a cancer researcher, E.M.’s story shows what’s possible when someone receives the right support at the right time.
